Sacred Spaces in Casa Andrew: The statue of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

In the upcoming Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we celebrated the first fruits of the Redemption. We celebrate, in this great feast, the promise that Mary, now Body and Soul in Heaven, continually intercedes for us before the Throne of her Son. What a wonderful grace God has shown to this, the purest of creatures. And what a great comfort for us here in this Vale of Tears, knowing that we have an intercessor in Heaven before the Throne of Our Lord.

In the humble house of Andrew, we honour the Blessed Virgin, as Our Lady of the Assumption (among her other titles).

This 4 foot statue of the Assumption pays homage to Our Lady and captures the moment of her Assumption into Heaven.

It is modelled after 2 famous versions of the Assumption painted by Bartolomé Esteban Murillo (1617-82), shown above and below. From the painting above, we get Mary's pose, and upward gaze. From the painting below, details such as the half moon beneath her feet are taken.

The results of this synthesis:

The Blessed Virgin Mary, here shown as Our Lady of the Assumption, is shown being assumed into Heaven. Plump Baroque style cherubs are depicted here, carrying the banner of Our Lady.

Her feet stands amidst the clouds, one foot on the moon, as the Book of Revelation reveals. "Rev 12:1 A great and wondrous sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head." She is being supported by cherubs, in the Baroque fashion, being lifted by them into Heaven.

Her eyes look heavenward, already seeing the Beatific Vision of Her Son, God the Father and her Spouse, the Holy Spirit.

As we follow the Heavenward gaze of Our Blessed Mother, let us lift up our hearts to God, thanking Him for the graces that He has chosen to dispense through Our Blessed Mother.

May we too, one day, join Mary before God's Throne. There, with the angels and all the saints, and the Blessed Virgin we hope to worship and adore Him forever more.
