Tota pulchra es, Maria, et macula originalis non est in te

The 8th of Dec, 2007. The Feast of the Immaculate Conception.

Tota pulchra es is an old Catholic prayer, written in the fourth century AD. It is one of the five antiphons for the psalms of Second Vespers for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. The title means "You are completely beautiful" (referring to the Virgin Mary). It speaks of her Imaculate Conception. It takes some text from the Book of Judith, and other text from Song of Songs.

Tota pulchra es, Maria
et macula originalis non est in te.
Vestimentum tuum candidum quasi nix, et facies tua sicut sol.
Tota pulchra es, Maria,
et macula originalis non est in te.
Tu gloria Jerusalem, tu laetitia Israel, tu honorificentia populi nostri.
Tota pulchra es, Maria.

Thou art all fair, Mary,
And original sin is not upon thee,
Thy clothing is as pure as snow,
And thy face shines as the sun.
Thou art all fair, Mary,
And original sin is not upon thee,
Thou art the glory of Jerusalem,
Thou art the delight of Israel,
Thou art worthy of the respect of our people,
Thou art all fair, Mary.

A very fine website! I found you when I was searching for the words to "Tota pulchra es Maria."

You might be interested in reading Thomas Woods, "How the Catholic Church Built Western Civilization" (2005). Much that we consider "modern" (such as universities, the scientific method, free market economics, modern diplomacy, international law, and a sense of the sacredness of life) started with the Catholic Church.

The Church is the leaven that makes the bread rise. Not everything will become yeast (who wants to eat yeast?), but enough will be there to raise humanity with the Life of God (= "grace").

Thanks, Mentor. yes, I actually have that book. It's a good book and that why when Europe tries to progress without it's roots, grounded within the Catholic tradition from which it sprung and from which it's identity was formed, it will actually slide back into another dark age =)

You may browse thru some books from my library from the widget at the bottom left of the page.

Thanks again for visiting.
