The Holy Father has replaced Josef Cardinal Glemp, Stefan Cardinal Wyszynski's
chosen successor whom John Paul appointed against his better judgment as Archbishop of Warsaw and Primate of Poland.

The Cardinal has not exactly gone along with the John Paul flow but was kept out of respect for Cardinal Wyszynski's last wishes.

VATICAN CITY, DEC 6, 2006 (VIS) - The Holy Father:

- Appointed Bishop Stanislaw Wojciech Wielgus of Plock, as metropolitan archbishop of Warsaw (area 3,350, population 1,533,600, Catholics 1,439,600, priests 1,076, religious 1,020), Poland. The archbishop-elect was born in Wierzchowiska, Poland in 1939, he was ordained a priest on 1962 and consecrated a bishop in 1999. He succeeds Cardinal Jozef Glemp, whose resignation from the pastoral care of the same archdiocese, the Holy Father accepted, upon having reached the age limit.

Cardinal Glemp, who will be 77 on Dec. 18, will retain the title of primate of Poland until he is 80, the Pope told him in a letter, the Holy See reported Wednesday.

Stanislaw Wielgus was born on April 23, 1939, in Wierzchowiska, and was ordained priest on June 10, 1962, in the Archdiocese of Lublin.

From 1969 until his episcopal ordination he taught at the Faculty of Philosophy of the Catholic University of Lublin.

His fields of specialization are medieval philosophy and the history of Polish philosophy. Since 1989, he had three terms as rector of the Catholic University of Lublin.

On May 24, 1999, Pope John Paul II appointed him bishop of Plock. He is a member of the episcopal conference's Permanent Council and president of the Joint Commission of Representatives of the Government and of the Polish Bishops' Conference.

The new archbishop of Warsaw is a consultor for the Vatican Congregation for Catholic Education.
